World-class care for knees

Our medical staff is devoted solely to the treatment of knee injuries and conditions.

Nationally, 85% of the surgeons who perform ACL reconstructions do less than 10 ACL surgeries each year. Together at the Shelbourne Knee Center, Dr. Shelbourne and Dr. Urch perform about 250 ACL reconstruction surgeries each year.

Whatever your level of activity, you will receive individualized education and treatment regarding your knee.

ROM loss after ACLR linked to arthritis

The 2011 Best Poster Award went to a prospective study examining the link between the loss of normal knee range of motion (ROM) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and the incidence of arthritic changes observed on radiographs. The authors found that patients who were able to obtain and maintain normal knee motion had a lower incidence of such changes than patients who lost knee motion. Click here for the complete article

Mutka: Knee-dy athletes often turn to Gary native Shelbourne

March 14, 2011-When Dr. Donald Shelbourne attended Wabash College in the 1970s, torn ACLs were career killers for athletes like hall of famers Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus. Now, they're temporary setbacks because of surgical pioneers like him.

Shelbourne, a two-sport athlete at the all-male school, ended his athletic career with a knee injury in his senior year. Ironically, it inspired a career move that has prolonged the athletic life of many grateful warriors over the last three decades. Click here for the full Post-Tribune article.

Is knee replacement the only option?

Many patients come to us after being told that they need to have knee replacement surgery. Although there are times when knee replacement surgery is the best option, many patients benefit from the Shelbourne Knee Center's directed rehabilitation program and are able to avoid surgery.

Recently, we studied 50 patients with stiff, weak knees. These patients were treated with physical therapy that mainly focused on range of motion. 41 of these patients had arthritis and many had been told by other doctors that they would need a knee replacement. 84% of the patients in this study significantly improved with physical therapy.

In situations when total knee replacement is the best option, this same rehabilitation (focusing on range of motion) before surgery allows for a faster recovery. If you think you need a total knee replacement (or have been told you do), call us to explore your options.
